Motivation
In general it is in the interest of companies to share data if this results in an economic improvement or a competitive advantage. In principle, the (cross-company) use of data can serve to improve existing products or processes and to optimise business processes (motive 1). This factor will also usually be the primary reason that motivates companies to tap into data sources. Moreover, the use of data can also lead to the further development of existing business models or the devel opment of new business models (motive 2). This has been the case to a large extent in B2C markets. In these markets, the use of consumer data or creation of profiles during this process has sparked brand new opportunities for value creation and thus also the formation of new, sometimes disruptive business models. In the industrial B2B context, the starting position must be assessed differently with regard to the heterogeneity of the data and the associated integration efforts. Nevertheless, it is clear that here, too, existing business models will be further developed and new business models established, some of which are expected to be disruptive. Another reason motivating companies is that they are facing growing legislative and social pressure to take environmental and social criteria into account in their product portfolio (motive 3).
Background of the project
With the mandate of the EC we are working on the preparatory action laying the foundations for a European data space for Industry 4.0 called Data Space 4.0 (https://manufacturingdataspace-csa.eu).
Data Space 4.0 is an EC project under the Digital Europe programme and a new flagship initiative supported by the DFA (https://digitalfactoryalliance.eu/data-space-4-0-alliance/) establishing a cross-cutting community in the area of data spaces for manufacturing. In summary, Data Space 4.0 intends to coordinate and steer a multi-stakeholder governance model for data spaces in manufacturing counting on a consortium of 14 partners coming from a wide range of industry sectors and associations.
The objective of this European community is to join efforts and identify common principles for sharing industrial data throughout Europe. To have a shared goal will inspire the collaboration of the community which will set the foundations for a harmonized manufacturing data space continuum.
To enable the multilateral data exchange in manufacturing data spaces will play a key role. But which requirements are to be fullfilled to run data spaces in manufacturing? To find the importants requirements on data spacee in manufacturing is the purpose of this survey.
Course of the survey
You've come to the right place if you're involved in discussions on concepts for data spaces in manufacturing in political, business or research networks. Or if you already have experience with the implementation, operation, or use of data spaces in manufacturing.
The survey is structured into 3 sections:
• Introduction and contributor information
• rating and input of/ for requirements on data spaces for manufacturing
• conclusion.
You have the options to take part anonymous or by submitting your contact data, e.g., to be informed about the outcomes of the survey and the progress of the project at all. In any case some general information about you will be asked.
The rating and input section will be separated in three subjects for each topic (technical, business, and legal requirements):
• Rating of collected requirements
• Providing of further requirements
• Providing of known Examples
You can skip any topic you feel not familiar with.
Even if the focus of the survey lies on the rating of the collected requirements on a Likert-Scale from 1 to 6, the opportunity to obtain further requirements and of known examples for good implementation of the requirements will be used by corresponding subsections.
If you have passed the before described sections a summary of your contribution will be displayed and the option to edit will be given. After that the option to stay in contact with the project via different channels will be provided.
Your contribution to the survey will take approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Depending on how much input you provide in the free text sections.
You can use the next button on the end of every question page to proceed to the next part of the survey.
Navigate to specific parts of the survey
You can navigate through the survey sections of your interest by using the question index (top right on every question page).

The record of your survey responses does not contain any identifying information about you, unless a specific survey question explicitly asked for it.
The survey is open until fall 2023
